Beautifully Illustrated Ecology Picture Books for Young Readers
MY NEW BOOK!
Dugan’s Daring Deep Dive Down into the Dazzling Dark Sea is my newest book on the amazing creatures that occupy the deep sea. As with all my books I selected twenty animals for you to discover in order to keep my books about a fifteen minute read.
There is so much more to explore that I hope you do some research on your own before I can make more books on the creatures I had to leave out!

Why My Books Are Awesome!
-
My stories are grounded in real places, plants, animals and ecological relationships, so children not only enjoy imaginative tales but also get a window into the natural world and each ecological habitat or niche — its beauty, complexity and wonder. These aren’t just fairy settings—they reflect real ecosystems and encourage respect for nature and the unique creatures that have adapted to survive there.
-
These books are written and illustrated to engage young readers (and read-aloud listeners) in the preschool to early-elementary age range. The language, pacing and visuals are designed to hold interest for ages 4-9, making them a great fit for bedtime, classroom read-alouds or independent exploration.
-
Each book comes with extra guidance tools for older readers: discussion ideas, research prompts and exploration ideas to extend learning beyond the story and encourage questioning. These bonus materials help families, classrooms and curious children dig deeper—investigating the ecosystems, nature connections and themes found in the story. Links to further reading or websites round out the tools so the book becomes a launch-point for exploration, not just a one-time read. Occasionally I add in some extra activity sheets, like coloring pages. Some are free on my site to download under EXTRAS.
-
Each book is brought to life by my artistry: every illustration is hand-drawn with care, intention and personality. You’ll find no artificial intellegence-generated images in my books —just genuine craftsmanship and stories that add warmth and individuality to every page. Check out my TikTok videos on my illustration process under MY WORLD.
My style in writing and illustrating mimics my real painting and takes days for each graphic spread - sometimes as much as a week for every two page spread and every paragraph can take as much as two days to research and craft into a small amount of words.
I hope you enjoy my books as a much as I did in making them!

With hand-illustrated artwork (no AI involved), stories rooted in real ecosystems and nature, and a reading level tailored perfectly for ages 4-8, my books bring genuine artistry and meaningful connection with the natural world to young readers. Plus, each volume includes bonus guidance for older children, families, or classrooms—discussion questions, research prompts, exploration ideas and links to further materials—so the story becomes the start of discovery rather than the end and opens discussions on a whole wide world of subjects, bad and good.
Welcome!
My name is John Cayden and I'm an author, illustrator, and environmental education specialist who crafts stories that spark curiosity and a love for nature in young readers. After a long successful career as a museum director, exhibition developer, designer and curator, I transitioned into writing children’s books, driven by my passion for educating the next generation about the diverse life on Earth.
Drawing from my knowledge as a licensed environmental educator, I write and illustrate beautiful and humorous full color books with coloring pages and extras that focus on the unique ecosystems and creatures that inhabit our amazing planet. From the prairies to the deep ocean, my stories explore the wonders of nature, with a particular emphasis on ecological education.
My work is a celebration of life, from groundhogs and chipmunks to corals and sea creatures, all designed to foster a deeper connection to the environment in the precocious youth destined to become the next stewards and protectors of our beautiful and unique planet.
My early books, Pecas & Paloma and Wilson in a Wet Wet Land have been well received and my latest projects, Cora’s Corals and Dugan's Daring Deep Dive, bring readers on an undersea adventures exploring the beauty and importance of coral and the amazing creatures, some newly discovered, living at the unbelievable deep levels of our vast oceans.
With new works coming soon, and a list of ecological niches I want to publish before I'm dust, I'm dedicated to continuing my mission of educating the future protectors of Earth, by inspiring through storytelling - the facts about the amazing diversity of life left on this unique planet.
Please sign up for my mailing list if you want to be notified when I publish a new book or if you just want to say hi or offer some comments or suggestions or submit your own animal art.
Thank you for your support and happy reading!
Happy Earth!
WHERE HAVE THE OLD TREES GONE
My next book is based on a wonderful book that was written by an amazing, super intelligent and kind man that I had the fortune to meet years ago as a very young museum exhibition developer. His name is John Perlin and he changed my life with his book A Forest Journey.
After reading his book in my role as a museum education specialist, I went on to create a summer camp curriculum for youth based trees and forest ecology and eventually raised enough money to create a small traveling exhibition based on John’s book that toured the country for years, and even had copies ordered for other countries! The exhibit was crafted by artisans and designers that were committed to the preservation of Earth’s forest and rented to multiple public facilities, well beyond its expected lifetime of ten years.
And now I’m making a children’s book out of it!
All work is illustrated by me using professional digital painting tools - 100% handcrafted artwork and I have the back aches and carpal tunnel from every critter - AI-generated art is a no and I do worry about my work being stolen by foreign actors.
